The pups dropped off one by one, joining their mother in sweet slumber. Peregrine wished he had some way to take a snapshot of this moment, with Fox curled around their four newborns, all five of them snoring away peacefully. Since he didn't, he stared a long time, committing the picture to memory.
At length, he moved from a position opposite Fox and stepped over her to lower himself behind her, the big spoon to her little spoon. Peregrine had no intention of sleeping, though. He didn't dare shut his eyes for longer than a blink. Settling his chin on his petite mate's shoulder, he just gazed at their four children.
Welcome to the world, kiddos! We've wanted you for so long. We already love the shit out of you, Peregrine thought, not for one second doubting that his mate, though exhausted, felt the exact same way toward the pups they'd dreamed of together for so long, the fruit of their hearts, loins and the caldera itself.
