The woman took her self-appointed task very seriously. Having nothing better to do, Ra marched endlessly through the woods that were now her home, nose working constantly to catalogue the many scents that made up Drageda. They were not as pleasing or familiar as the scents of her mountain, but there were still trees. There was still dust. Squirrels and rabbits still skittered across the ground. She would miss her people, but these were her people, also, and she would learn to call this her home.
Most importantly, she would start to call Heda her commander - not only in her head, but also in her heart. It was for this reason she'd come across the world; to reconcile herself, to exorcise the demons that had lived in her since the day her pack had been taken over, the day her childhood had ended. The day her mother had died.
The pain was only an echo, now. Ra couldn't even remember the feelings that had taken hold of her that day. She could not remember the hurt or the loneliness, or even the sorrow of knowing she would never see the woman again. But, sometimes, when she thought of Thuringwethil, she thought that she could.
Ra didn't know why these feelings were associated with the woman. Ra was loyal, and she loved her people, adopted and born, and she understood the reasoning behind the merging of their two packs. It had been logical, and her mother's death was not Thuringwhethil's fault. But, for some reason, her heart had assigned the blame, and when she thought of the dark woman, she could feel nothing but fear, and anger, and confusion. It helped to think of Heda as a wise, disembodied voice - but she was a big girl, now, and it did not sit right with her to serve a woman she could not trust.
So Ra would learn to trust her. She had to.
And Thuringwethil would learn to trust her. So Ra patrolled, and when she came across Heda's scent, she made sure to wag her tail, hoping that her body might fool her heart into happiness.

portia was not a fan of the borders. she was not a mercenary and was a very poor fighter-- should trouble come she would be the last wolf you'd want defending you. but, she needed some fresh air, and due to a bee sting to the nose she wasn't smellin' any good plants to collect-- she'd be fine tomorrow. instead she just went for a stroll, coming upon a wolf she'd yet to meet officially yet-- truthfully she didn't even know her name. she gave a friendly chuff and wave of her tail to grab her attention, standing a small ways off with her head cocked.

Somehow, Ra ended up seeing the woman before she smelled her. Perhaps it was because she had been so intent on the woman's scent a moment before, noting its presence - faint but sure - between the trees. She'd thought the scent just a ghost of the one she'd studied, but here was the woman, in the flesh.
"Heya," Ra said with a cheerful flicker of her tail. "Yu de plan kom goufas, sha?" Of course, there was more than one mother in the pack, but in Ra's mind, all mothers seemed to bleed together. She'd not interacted with many nursing women, and truthfully, she didn't care to.
But the woman was pack, and aside from that, she was comely. Ra would not be unkind to her. In fact, she would do her best to be a shining model of friendliness.

portia squinted, repeating the statement in her head once or twice before she sorted out a proper understanding of what the other had meant. "one of them," she responded with a small smile. with a gentle dip of her head, the freckled bell added, "i am portia, drageda's fisa." she raised her head before letting it tip gentle to one side, studying the stranger with much curiosity. "wildfire is the other mother, mated to our heda, myself to dio, drageda's wocha." too much information? probably. but portia had been cramped in a den for a while, it was nice to be able to talk to someone who wasn't dio or wildfire or children who didn't understand a damn thing. her introduction begged a reply for a similar response, one that maybe told a short story of her own past. then again, this woman was not portia, and perhaps wouldn't think to give a whole lesson of details to a complete stranger-- packmate or not.

Ra's ears flicked backward in confusion and then forward again in attentiveness as words poured from Portia's mouth. They were not wholly unfamiliar to the woman, but it took a moment for her to get into the right mind. When she'd gained understanding, Ra's tail wagged once more. "Pleased to meet you," she replied, hesitant only because she couldn't seem to make this tongue flow as well as her own. "I'm Ra - I come from a settlement northeast of here, where I was fleima," she explained, knowing that she'd want all the details, if she'd been a mother speaking to a newcomer for the first time.
A moment later, Ra made the connection between another set of Portia's words. Mated to our Heda? she thought, a feeling like anger fluttering in her chest. But it wasn't anger - Ra squashed it down before it got the chance to be. This had to be a misunderstanding, and if it wasn't, it was just something else she would have to learn to accept.
"Heda has a mate?" she asked politely, hoping the allegation would be swiftly denied. "And goufas?"
