The little river rat knew good and well that when the first chill struck his porch, it would not do to stay there through winter. He had spent several days bothering himself with ideas of where he could go before he had put a sound plan into action.
Badger had said that it would be fine for Ratty to stay with him during the cold months, that he had plenty of food to be shared and warmth in his home. Rat had taken the offer most joyously and had said he would bring all his best treats for the stay. It had not been until the small creature had started to pack his things, not until he had gathered all his most valuable treasures, that he realized he was quite sad to be going.
Ratty stood on the edge of his river and reminisced in the scents of his home. Mole would be at Badger’s too, so there would be plenty to talk about. With a single brush of his paw to the doorway, Ratty climbed in his little boat and paddled down the river to where Badger waited to welcome him in.
