How the crap did this happen?!

Giddy and supercharged by the recent success of the 'Dragonwatcher' launch, Ariston's grin was quite smug as he wandered along the muddy banks of Greatwater. It'd been a few days since the expedition had begun and aside from a few -he prayed imaginary- gray hairs things had not exploded in his face. And as a young adolescent now living as alpha of a pack he was pretty gosh darn proud.

He veered and stomped into the shallow waters beside him...stirring the silt beneath the paws and creating a murky trail as he hiked against the weak current. Droplets sprayed in every direction as he kicked and leapt in a game of chase against himself; his every nerve singing with the jubilation of things having gone so well.

She was hungry, and the nearby lake stood out like a beacon. Camping out by bodies of water had saved her from a hungry belly times before, so she decided to stick with the precedent. Since early morning she had been hidden amongst the undergrowth near the eastern side of the lake, gray eyes keen for any movement near the movement near the banks. Now, anything like deer or elk was far beyond her ability to bring down alone, but anything smaller—hares, beavers, anything like that—wouldn’t be as much of a struggle.

Some time after she had settled down to watch, she did see something, but it ended up being more of a someone. Another wolf, male, assumedly around her own age; he was—well, what was he doing? At first it seemed he had been trying to dig into the silt of the lake’s floor, but now he was dashing through the water. Such unrestrained joy she had not really seen in another wolf since the days of her childhood. It was somewhat entrancing; she stood and left her place of hiding, approaching the bank and the other wolf. “What are you doing?” she asked, very nearly without noticing. Her head tilted slightly to one side, matte gray eyes confused.

Sorry about that brief wait! I was fixing a crisis with our upcoming family vacation the past few days xD

--

It was not until the call of a stranger reached him that Ariston's parade came to a halt...and a screeching one at that. Tendons in his neck popped with the hasty swing of his head to better look at his surprise guest; the tip of one foot was suspended just so on the surface that the minute reverberations of his body sent delicate ripples where the toes skimmed the water. The initial caution of his expression was overwhelmed by his better nature when but a single femme came into focus...her unthreatening appearance dissipating his brief concerns of ambush.

His plume swung once and sent a thin veil of lake water in its wake. "I'm celebrating!" he shouted in reply. His dangling paw plunged into the murky shallows and sent a geyser up against his neck and chin. Laughing as the liquidy beard trickled down his chest he did what felt best in the current situation: returning the question. "What are you doing?!"

(No problem! I've been pretty busy as well with lots of stuff. ^^)

The level of surprise that Ariston felt must’ve been somewhat contagious—the violent snap of his head in her direction startled Hiraeth, causing her to skitter back a step or two. Nothing moved for a minute except for the light refracting off of the water. Part of the girl wanted to run, but her muscles locked her in place. This was a bad idea, she despaired, Eppes always said that there was danger in everything—strangers especially!

Though that moment seemed to hang forever (or, at least, in her mind), it broke and the other wolf immediately reverted to his previous jovality. Hiraeth remained awestruck. “Celebrating?” she parroted, more to herself than anyone. The concept seemed almost foreign to her. And though his question was warranted, with her own asking, questions had a habit of making her defensive. “Waiting f-for—uh. Hunting.” A passive way of hunting, but a way of hunting nonetheless. Not that there’d be anything coming to drink anywhere near here now, she thought, regarding the stranger’s splashing.
