All Welcome
All welcome!

Kaori had already been granted many gifts in her young life. Within her first month, the child had gained the abilities of motion, sight, and of hearing. She took it in, embracing her life and the experiences that presented themselves.

The sunlight of early morning gently lapped at the den’s entrance. Kaori had already been up for quite some time, but she felt drawn to the light. Picking herself up from the den’s nest, the inky child teetered delicately towards the entrance and sat. She squinted as she gazed out, adjusting to the light, and simply took it all in.

Since her first outing, Shiori had spent much of her time at the mouth of the den. She did not stray too far, though sometimes ventured out to pick a leaf from some nearby plant. Today she mouthed at a stick, bark peeling from it and clinging to her tongue so that she had to pause and scrape it off every so often.

Soon she found herself joined by her sister and, in a show of affection, Shiori offered the other end of her stick. Hi, she said softly. The greeting had been one of the first words she learned and, thus far, was her favorite of her limited repetoir.

Kaori had been all too involved with the outdoors in general to even notice her sister nearby. It was only as she was offered a greeting that she turned towards her dark sibling and the offered prize. A smile was quick to spread and the Hatchling offered a softly spoken and affectionate, “Hi.”

Gently leaning forward, Kaori settled herself next to her sibling and took hold of the stick with a swaying tail.

Just as they had done in their early days, they sat close together now, the prized stick shared between them. Her sister returned the greeting, her voice a gently rolling wave across her vision. Shiori bubbled happily, delighted by the sight and sound of her sister's voice. Hi! she replied. Kori. Her mother's lessons had stuck, by now she knew the most important words. Namely, what she was to call herself and her sisters, though her annunciation could use some work.

Kaori’s tail tipped to a fro as she happily chewed on the stick and she was only distracted from such delights when her sister spoke again. Lifting her head and perking, Kaori looked to her sister with a smile, pulling her head back slightly when she was was regarded by her name.

“Kori.”

She nodded to this and smiled. “Hi! Shiowi!” The intensity of her wagging tail only increased as she looked to her sister, as if to say, “Hi! I know your name, too!”

Their tails whipped in tandem, or near enough. Several times their tails met in the middle, smacking together painlessly and then coming apart. Shiori found that she quite enjoyed having Kaori share her stick with her, then they could both have fun!

Shiori delighted in the sound of her name, though her sister's pronunciation was less exact than her mother's. Good! cried the hatchling. She leaned over and pressed her nose against her sister's cheek affectionately, then giggled playfully. Kooooori she sing-songed.

Kaori beamed under her sister’s praise and a smile wrapped about her snout as she put aside the stick for a moment in favor of exchanging words. “Shiowi, weef!” Came her delicate response. Though she wasn’t quite sure where she had heard the word, she liked the way that it so easily rolled off her tongue.

“Weef, weef, weef!” She joined in on her sister’s song, her tones as light as a gentle rolling breeze.

Shiori, who had been fascinated by leaves since the moment she discovered them, looked around curiously, wondering where the leaf was. It had been one of her first words, and an errant leaf had been one of her first and favorite toys. So, with all of the patience and confidence of a child, she said, no. Lllllleeeefff. It was a long, drawn out correction, and halfway through she became more interested in the feel of the word in her mouth than in the lesson.

Hm, it didn’t seem like she had said it right. Her tail cantered carefully as she looked to her sister and watched on with confusion. With the correction spoken, a look of concentration came upon her soft features as she attempted to correct herself.

“Weeeeeeeaaaaffff….” No, that was quite right. Not right at all! She paused then, her tongue flailing  wildly as she attempted to wrangle the pesky “l” sound. “Laaawwww…. Laaaawwwweeef!” She blinked and pulled her head back in surprise. Did she get it? Quickly, her milky eyes turned to her sister, seeking the acceptance she needed.

Shiori watched her sister wrestle the word eagerly, interested to see how she would do. She wholeheartedly wished for her sister's success, for there were few wolves in her world, and she loved all of them dearly. With great concentration and effort, Kaori mastered the L in leaf. Shiori yipped excitedly. Leef! Good, Kori! Good! cried she, her entire butt wiggling with the ferocity of her wagging tail.

Thankfully, her efforts were met with praise. She beamed at her sister, her tail waving with excitement as a sense of achievement overcame her. “Goood, Kaowi, good!” To show her appreciation, she leaned to her sister and nudged her shoulder while she gazed up to her with a smile.

No longer could she contain her excitement. It had built and built and, like a spring, then had to release. With a sharp cry of glee she leapt upon her sister then hopped back, but still wiggling as she dipped low into a play bow. Koriii, she hummed, hoping to tempt her sister into some play fighting.

The sister’s shared excitement fremeted within them in different way. Shiori, whose happiness exploded like a fierce firework, bounded in her excitement as the ideal of playing came about. Kaori’s excitement resonated differently. It churned within, causing her heart to race and for a sense of giddiness to bubble at her lips.

Slowly, she came to a stand in response, smiling at her sister. Though she wished not to fight, she would watch on with a drumming heart and see how her sister would react.

Though her sister seemed less outwardly excited than she, Shiori's energy did not diminish. Up her sister got, and Shiori broke her bow to run a tight, excited circle. But Kaori didn't mirror the bow, indeed, she hardly seemed interested in wrestling at all! The little hatching did not let this get to her. With one little paw she tapped her sister, hoping to get the message across that they needed to play! Kori, she intoned.

Not wanting to give in the fight, Kaori looked onto her sister with a sense of apprehension, her tail tipping to and fro and she watched her sister plead. Though she felt somewhat guilty for not wanting to fight, she also did not want to fight. Why couldn’t they go and sniff things? Or taste things? Such ideas excited her. “Shiowi… nooo!” She whined eventually in response, stamping a foot upon the ground to show that she didn’t want to fight.

Kaori became increasingly upset by Shiori's consistent overtures of play. She frowned, then backed off a few steps in the face of her sister's sharp disinterest. Finally she plopped down, looking guilty. Oh, she said, looking downtrodden. Kori? She looked up hopefully. If she didn't want to wrestle, maybe they could still do something else.

Shiori seemed to get the hint and though Kaori did not show her thankfulness in this, she surely did feel it. When a questioning tone rose, Kaori’s eyes quickly scanned the clearing and found the stick that they had abandoned. “Steek?” she offered, turning to her sister again as she recalled how fun it was to share.

Of course! How did she not think of the stick? They had had the most fun while playing with the stick and talking to each other. Obviously they could do that again. Yas, she said, pleased. She trotted back to the den's entrance and took up the stick again, watching Kaori patiently.

She smiled when he sister agreed and joined her quickly, settling herself before the stick and close enough to Shiori that they were touching. Happily, Kaori reached down and began to chew at the stick, her tail tipping happily in reflection of her happiness.
