All Welcome
As night fell over the caldera, so did a light snow, peppering the already chilled earth in a layer of powder that seemed to grow thicker by the day. Kaizer was invigorated by the cold, tirelessly throwing himself into hunts and patrolling, occasionally spending some downtime with those he had dared become closer to, bonding with them readily as he sought to further immerse himself into the Redhawk family. Though he did not feel truly accepted, he had found his place in duty, finding that as long as he doted on Fox -- consistently bringing her food and news from the borders -- he had a place among them.

Even now, as late as it was, he seemed to be returning from some important business at the edge of the territory. Though he aimed for the rendezvous site, eager to sleep beside some warm, welcoming body, the fresh scent of a raccoon distracted him. He turned toward the trail without even making the conscious decision to do so, and the wolf tracked down the nocturnal beast, very quickly relieving it of its lowly mortal coil.

Toting the dead bandit with him now, he looked now for a warmer spot to perch himself and eat.

It was getting late, but Elwood hadn't yet retired for the night. He prowled the rendezvous site amidst the falling snow, enjoying the peace and stillness that surrounded him. His life was finally back in some sort of order, though he thought often of Lucy. By now, he presumed she was dead, and he had taken to wondering if he and Finley should honor her with some sort of gravesite. Naturally, there was no body, but perhaps it would help the bereaved parents gain some closure.

He hadn't yet found the perfect location -- nor had he breached the topic with Finley -- but his restless paws kept him moving, until the smell of fresh meat drew his attention. Ahead, he spotted Kaizer; a wolf that he hardly knew, but who often smelled of Fox and had assisted when Eljay passed out from undernourishment. He blinked in the gathering darkness and hazy curtain of snow, then he chuffed a wordless greeting as he approached the lower ranked male with a relatively friendly stance.

Kaizer realized as he hunkered down to eat, that he'd only killed the creature out of mild boredom; that he wasn't truly hungry and food wasn't at all what he thought he needed. As he started to ponder what it was he truly wanted, his reddened ears twitched up at the sound of Elwood's amiable approach, and his tail began to thump against the ground as he invited the beta closer with his relaxed body language.

The Bluesummer was a virile wolf, by all standards. He very much wanted to usurp the highest ranking male in the caldera, but he wasn't as reckless without the intoxicating aid of hormones, and he knew the smartest way to go about besting Elwood would be to befriend him first. Only in the hopes of dispelling any potential hard feelings that might form between them, should he suddenly feel the desire to cease submitting to him. For now, however, he was quite content to be subservient to the pepper-grey wolf.

"Join me?" he asked, motioning to the cold spot beside him; unabashed about his need for closeness. "I've got food," he further tempted, nosing the half-chewed raccoon to give it an enticing little dead-wiggle.

Elwood's gaze fell to the food at Kaizer's feet as the other male beckoned him closer. He wasn't overly hungry, but could spare a bite; the offer to share was a sign of respect that would earn him a point in the Beta male's book. "Thanks," the Blackthorn replied as he dropped to his haunches. He steadied the carcass with a forepaw and then ripped off a small portion with his teeth, smiling at the taste of the still-warm meat.

After he had chewed and swallowed, he leveled his gaze at Kaizer. "Where do you come from?" he asked. The red-eared male had made himself home in Redhawk Caldera quickly and was unabashedly working his way up the ranks. He had flung himself into pack life with no hesitation, and Elwood distinctly remembered the way he had eagerly hunted for Eljay.

The conversation between the two males was short and stilted; after only a few minutes, they parted ways. Elwood still wasn't quite sure what to think of the subordinate.
