All Welcome

Each day Eske and the rest do not return is agony. There is little for her to do but wait these days, hoping they breech their borders once more sometime soon. She imagines them bringing both of them back with them, mostly in one piece, but home and some days she imagines them returning with the worst news, or if she’s having a half decent day, no news at all. But each day she is empty handed with nothing to go on and her restless mind has become quite difficult to keep quiet.

Most of the day is wasted and she’s done nothing more but skirt the borders, looking for signs. Spending time with Blixen and her training has been a little bit of a reprieve but it is not enough. Thuringwethil weaves through one tree after the next as the sun settles into the backdrop, sinking into the ocean where she can’t currently see. Her mind still goes a mile a minute, her legs antsy and restless, and she won’t stop until she’s tired herself out.

She had the luxury of not missing those who were absent from Drageda but she was not free of the palpable sorrow that lingered over those who remained.

It is daylight so Corva finds herself taking shelter beneath the thick canopy of the woods, providing her some respite from the garish and haunting light of day.  She spends this time inspecting the safer plants of Drageda, not quick to have another near death experience that Kati still has to write up and backdate.

As she examines a plant with long, white tendrils, it takes her back to somewhere painful as she recognizes it [mdash[ fatal to prey animals and easily kills children.  She spurns away from it and as she moves she can hear the footfalls of another; although she cannot see them she knows that this is not someone she has met, and she lets out a chuff to let them know she is there.

and i'll be at the back of your mind
waiting for you

In the depths of the redwoods, Thuringwethil finds the scent of a woman she does not know. It is a strange experience to encounter wolves she has not met. The times she visited Trigeda before Seageda’s fall often brought few wolves she didn’t know but in her own claim, she isn’t rather fond of it. Having put trust in Eske to take the lead for a few weeks while she recovered has brought in a few that never came under her scrutiny. She can only assume the woman this belongs to is the one that has become a friend of Cecil’s in his short stay in Drageda. She’s fallen ill, she’d been told briefly, but her movements lead her to believe she’s doing better.

Hopefully nothing they’d passed to one another since the stranger’s arrival. The chuff gives her a direct line as she steps through, the day coming to an end as the light announces its departure. Thuringwethil chuffs in return and nods her head, calling to the woman.
