It had been weeks since the battle and most of the wolves had recovered thanks to the involvement of the sea-witch Erzulie; it wasn't uncommon for Firefly to seek gifts upon the sand or along the seaside to bring her, but with the growing strength of the pack (in numbers as well as health) Firefly wished to find something extra special.
He was wary of the cave system ever since the cougar incident, thus he was waylayed, made to keep to the beach, although he was lucky at the moment and was trailing across the damp sand quite a ways out due to the recession of the tide. In a few hours the tide would sweep in again. For as far as he could see with his good eye, there was nothing but the dark, cold, empty space lined by a thin sheen of salt water.
So, he turned from the sea and began to march his way back. His large paws left divots in the sand as he went, and yet there would be no trace of his venture in a few hours once the sea returned to sweep it away.
