forward dated to 9/16 at the beginning of phase two: calamity. as of this thread you are free to reference scarab as MIA.

the ground beneath him rumbles like a hungry beast and trembles with unleashed fury. in an instant all bravado fails him and he is left with unfettered terror that threatens to freeze his muscles as he stumbles and lurches against a tree trunk. a small snarl leaves his lips as a rough branch splices his shoulder — the wound is shallow and the initial blood smears against the bleached ash but he pushes forward, breath caught in his throat as he thinks suddenly of his collection.

no, no, no! he repeats rapidly as his mantra as he makes his way to the grotto, his obsession clouding the fact that beneath ground was the worst place for him to go when the earth quakes. he dives into the darkness and weaves his way around the grotto, knowing it and it's secret passages like the back of his own paw as he hurls towards the cavern he's stashed his menagerie. his heart pounds against his chest, loud in his ears as he lets out a sigh of relief to see that it remains untouched. a few pieces are in the wrong place but he begins rooting through it trying to decide what he can part with ( though he is loathe to part with any of it! ) and what he cannot.

his petrified sandpiper — the crowning jewel — catches his eye and he makes a grab for it, eyes narrowing as another quake shakes the cavern around him. dirt and small pebbles loosen and then the roaring grows louder and he scrambles from the mouth of the cavern just as he'd been about to make his getaway as the rock and earth crack and split and cave in, barring his initial entrance. a whine slips part his lips, muffled as it parts around the prize clenched betwixt his jaws.

he tries to push aside the rock and then dig his way out — to no avail. his heart thrums with both adrenaline and fear as he swings his head around and looks for the small tunnel entrance he's begun digging wider. this part of the labyrinth was unexplored and as he plunges into the tunnel, steps quick and limbs shaking with fear and adrenaline he is wholly unsure whether it is leading him further underground ( and to what is surely his death ) or if it will lead to his salvation.
