Bit of papa power play <3 @June

Although it was not exactly a first outing, this warm spring-summer morning Papa had let them loose into the ‘back garden’. With strict instructions not to stray from his sight, FitzDutiful had splayed himself in front of the entrance to the den to wait for the inevitable – IE them straying from his sight.

Mason padded forward from his father’s breast, feeling trepidation and excitement in equal parts. His mottled white and grey fur lifted in a wicked mountain breeze, until he looked like a ruffled cotton bud with dirty splotches here and there. Mason lifted his nose to the wind, took a deep breath, then sneezed violently as the scents tickled his nostrils.

As suddenly as it had arrived, the breeze left, and the puppies were left in a still void of sunshine which danced along the ground in dapples of light. Mason turned, eyes bright and smile wide, to gaze at his little sister. “Joo… Wha May-May do?” cooed the boy gently. He had not yet mastered the word ‘look’ and so instead he danced a little jig on top of the sun-drenched earth, feeling the rays warm his body through. Leaves danced on the trees
nearby, joining in his thrill.

The light was still June's fascination. Colours reached her now and she marvelled in every subtle shade of it. Sometimes it stole her attention far more as it should, as it did now. She stared at the blades of grass, picking out the differences in the greens. They flickered from dark to light as the wind moved them and danced in the sunlight, each blade a slightly different shade to the one next to it.

As she stared in amazement at the scene, Mason saw fit to interrupt her. She didn't mind at all, his fur was just as marvellous as the grass. It had beautiful shades of brown and grey upon the base coat of white. But even that wasn't truly white, it had such subtle differences that captured her attention and she had to shake her head to loosen the grandeur of it.

Mason was using his words, she understood them - at least she thought she did. He wanted to know what to do right? Joo was her, May-May him. She wanted to reply. May-May play! she wanted to say, tried to say. her mouth opened and mouthed the words though no sound came. She tried again. Eventually she got an "ey" to arrive. She frowned, it wasn't what she had intended at all.

June shook her lithe head, sending her silken fur flying in a cascade of mane which outlined her features. Mason smiled at her, waiting patiently, understanding that it may take her some time to process what he had said and to respond. She had always taken great care in absorbing words and attempting to reply.

Mason smiled gently when June spoke, her syllable more than sufficient for his purpose. He nodded firmly, hoping to smooth away the frown that marred her pretty face. He danced towards her this time, silent as a ghostly shadow, and once close enough he gently lifted a paw and tapped her shoulder.

“Cat!” He woofed with enthusiasm. “Cat meee!” and with those words he was off. He ‘raced’ with careful slowness to his movements, dancing away from June and towards a large pine tree. As he reached its trunk he turned around to ensure she was indeed attempting to catch him, before he sidled around the trunk.

His paw touched her shoulder, sending a message down all her nerve endings and into her brain that something had been there. The entire process fascinated her as she tried to figure out how she knew she had been touched. This didn't last long, just long enough for Mason to issue the challenge and once he started moving June set off as well.

Mason's loping was careful whereas June's was clumsy. She was constantly almost tripping but catching herself before she fell, however none of this concerned her. A huge smile graced her face as she followed Mason, her sights set on her brother and her aim was to touch him as he had her. It didn't have to be his shoulder, any part of him would do. She just wanted to prove that she could do this too.

Eventually he stopped moving, and turned to check on her. She stretched out her paw, aiming to get his rump or tail before he sidled around the trunk of the tree.

She chased him with all of the speed she could. Despite Mason’s short legs, he was much more speedy than his sister. With big brotherly care, he ensured that he was not too far ahead. She was running after him, her face split by a sunny grin. Mason’s heart swelled with happiness. He loved seeing his little sister happy.

His pause at the tree was his downfall. She was closer on his heels than he had thought. Mason felt a paw swipe him on the rump as he was about to set off again. He caught his movement, managed to pirouette, and yipped with glee.

“Ya got me!” He shouted with enthusiastic excitement, glad she had achieved a clear win without him having to let her (as he often did) “Now ammit!” I’m it! She knew the rules. Mason bounced on his paws, giving her chance to process this, turn and run away.

A leaf had started to capture her attention, it had fallen past Mason's fur when she had scraped him and caused him to be it. June had started to investigate it when his exclamation pulled her away from the intricacies of it's design. "ee ee" Me, me, she echoed - for a second forgetting that she had just tagged him and bopping him again on the closest part of him (his head?).

Then she turned and, focusing on her steps, started to gallop away from the tree - spying a large rock that would be her salvation. Carefully she placed her paws, knowing that she moment she forgot to do so she would stumble and grant him an early victory. She wanted to at least make it to the rock, even if going around it caused her to be caught. Baby steps of progress.

June was just simply June. A leaf had caught her attention – but she did pull away when she heard Mason’s war cry. Her sweet voice threw out syllables which could only be deciphered by her close family oftentimes. Mason tilted his head to one side, confused, then received a bop between his ears from June. He chortled, waiting for her to turn and run. Perhaps she hadn’t realise she had touched him the first time.

June turned and sped away, as fast as her little legs could carry her. Mason began to count down softly under his breath, from ten, allowing her a decent headstart. Once she was far enough past him he set off, making his footfalls as loud as he could so she would know he had.

He still closed in on her quickly, despite trying to keep his gallop to a minimum. Carefully he reached out to tap her…

I thought I'd replied to this already!

The hit connected but June didn't register that it meant it was her turn. She reached her rock gleefully and looked around from behind it. Did she see Mason chasing after her, or was her now running away? Regardless, she would be coming out from behind her rock and running in his direction. Her mind had forgotten the rules of tag, the requirement for one to be hit and then become the chaser. Instead she was just running and playing.

The aim of this carefully running was to pounce on her brother dearest and turn the game of tag into a pleasant, lovable rough'n'tumble session. She innately honing those hunting skills that later life might rely on.

June appeared to have lost some of the context of the game. Regardless, Mason adapted accordingly. Being only two of the litter, they spent so much time together it was easy for him to read her like an open book.

Mason allowed her to come up on him from behind and – when she jumped on him – he allowed himself to slump to the floor as though she had been a dead-weight, not a feather. He giggled and rolled underneath her from side to side, attempting to dislodge her whilst trying to reach up and get a grip on some of her fur.

Mason successfully dislodged her, as she knew he would, and their game of rough and tumble would continue until either she tired out or he saw and understood that she couldn't go on for much longer. It's how it always went and she loved that big brother looked out for her so much. It was hard to be so small and so inept at things that others were undoubtedly succeeding at. But she wouldn't give up. She would keep trying and keep learning, no matter how long it took her.

For now, she was just content to practice her pouncing, her tackling and her grabbing. As well as let Mason learn his. There was only one thing more important to her than her education - that was his. She was becoming more and more aware that she had restrictions, ones that he didn't have, but she knew he would care for her and look after her. Together, they would be okay.
