It had been a long time since Beau was alone. The solitude did not suit him. It discomforted him.
He was born into a family of six, all women, and all without father's - including him. When they weren't walking the plains they were with the pack of his uncle, and though mama didn't like it in the least Beau knew that she would not abandon his aunt. After them it had been his band of cattle hunters - though Cebrian was the one who truly pulled him there.
Mama told him not to go, his sister's mocked him, uncle Erasmo and his son's threatened to beat him, and his aunt - well, she said nothing. The women in that pack never talked much. The fighting only pushed him further into the embrace of his first lover.
Then of course, Cebrian died. Now he was here. When the shot went off he ran, and he kept running until nothing was familiar to him anymore.
He let out a breath, pushing the thoughts from his busy head. The coast was his focus now: for Leto.

The scent of Bearclaw was absent, a relief. Kirain moved through the landscape unburdened by their presence, though the mere thought of them made her stomach twist. They invaded space so aggressively, their scent alone enough to unsettle her. She understood their need to protect their home, but still...
She exhaled sharply, shaking her head as if to dispel the unease.
Her mind was a storm, waves of thought crashing against the fragile shore of her resolve. She would not waver, of that, she was certain. Yet uncertainty still gnawed at the edges of her determination. There was so much to consider, so much left undone.
Her wandering felt fruitless, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. What was she searching for? What was her next step? The question echoed relentlessly, pressing heavy against the brightness she usually carried.

Kindness is the beginning of cruelty.
