He blinked, and the world awakened, infant senses breaking on the shores of colour. The dark world he'd known have way to light, to shape, to sight. A soft squeak, a startled shake of his head, and then, he laughed.
The child wiggled in a little circle at his mother's belly to bap the sleeping lumps around him. Two looked the same, and when he glanced at his own paws, he saw they looked they same color as the last pup there, the one who didn't much lol like either of the others at all. He stopped at this one and sniffed at him, leaning in closer to get a better look.

Wretch. Squirming, squealing, shoving.
The slight push of movement from a sibling and it woke with a start. Eyes were growing clear, but as beautiful as the world was it was all the same in the eyes of such a creature. Something to be conquered, something to take from.
One sibling moved too much, it caused a stir of something within the beast. Something new. Infant jaws moved, latching to the squirming light-furred pup with a gummy mouth.

Light broke through the darkness, and all at once Crosscurrent knew color and shape and movement. The beauty of the moment was not lost on him; even in infancy, he was nothing if not thoughtful, and filled with thought. In his own small wordless way he let himself feel the awe of it, the newness; the magic.
And he knew his twin, too, the moment he laid new eyes on the moonwrought shape of him. How could he not? This one had been with him from the first. Crosscurrent had known his twin almost before he'd had a sense of self. When his brother leaned in, Crosscurrent reached out with both paws to grasp his face. I'm here, the soft gesture said; I felt you before I ever saw you.
But there was movement — something else, something other. Crosscurrent stiffened, drew back, and wailed. Something was wrong. It felt wrong — and his twin was caught in it.

And at once, he knew: these soft paws that held him, they could have been his own.
Brilliant eyes reflected him, thrown in colours he would know as the sea and, after youth took hold, the sunlight reflecting off his own tossing waves. Though already he knew by all instinct that to stare meant to assert, there was nothing of dominance in the connection that bound their gaze together.
I feel you, too, Riptyde blinked in understanding. Then, he leaned in and pressed his forehead against his twin's, and now, I see.
And all of a sudden, movement and sound crashed in breakers across the little den. Crosscurrent wailed as Lilimsar struck, and Riptyde twisted as a mouth leeches onto his bum.
Unlike his brother, the smaller twin barked a laugh. These others were already as strange as distant shores.
Riptyde twisted on clumsy paws and gummed at the air. He couldn't grab the other with his own toothless bite, so he rolled to try and trap then under his frame.
