Unlike last time, there was no triumphant return for Ipiktok. No feeling of accomplishment or victory. No reward or prize.
He was forced home with no greater knowledge of his animal totem. The spirits had been quiet and kept their secrets from Ipitok’s mortal ears. Their silence outlasted his body’s will, and the young man was lean and gaunt when he finally crossed Moonglow’s borders.
Vexed but humbled, Ipiktok unconspicuously slipped back into village life. He avoided others as his ego healed and thought back to the great hunt, yearning for the time when he didn’t know the foreign taste of failure.
But he was Sunshine and it was certain his gloom would not last long.
The afternoon sky was gray. He milled about the lodge Akmaaksi had once showed him, but the vision he had for this place had grown hazy.
