the lake ran slow. there was a thin layer of ice that seemed intent to build along front but had yet found little success. a school of fish swam just beneath the surface.
the scene was gruesome but nothing that hadn't been scene before. moriah recalled a dream of a similar nature, wherein she was the beast left mauled in the snow. it was her own innards spread haphazardly on the ground, her own blood sitting atop frozen soil.
it had been some time since his death. the corpse was deflated, nearly flat, with burrows dug into the fur. at some point, a gathering of maggots had dug through his eye sockets, leaving them empty and covered by only a thin sheath of skin.
and yet, despite the nature of the incident, it didn't appear that he'd fought back at all. moriah wondered what'd happened, why he'd given up; perhaps he hadn't given up, rather giving in to what he knew would come.
