the river roared with life, its icy waters surging over smooth stones, weaving through the frozen wilderness like a serpent. solharr stood poised on its edge, the cold wind cutting through his thick fur, though he hardly seemed to notice. his eyes, sharp and focused, traced the surface of the water, searching for movement.the otters had proven elusive, their sly nature matching the slippery environment they called home. but solharr was patient, a hunter born of necessity, and his hunger was secondary to the task at hand. he could not eat them—not a single one—though the temptation gnawed at him with every passing moment.
with a low growl of determination, solharr leapt onto a slick stone in the middle of the river, his powerful frame landing with practiced precision. the water sprayed up around him, cold droplets clinging to his dark coat, but he kept his balance. his ears swiveled, catching the faint sounds of movement beneath the surface.
a sudden ripple drew his attention, and solharr’s gaze locked onto the hovel nestled beneath an outcrop of rock. his muscles coiled, and with another powerful leap, he landed closer, his paws skimming the edge of the hovel’s entrance.
he crouched low, his breath misting in the frigid air as he peered into the dark crevice. the scent of otter was strong here, and he could feel the faint tremor of movement within.
clever little devils,he muttered under his breath, his lips pulling into a wry grin.
he plunged a paw into the hovel, sharp claws curling to hook his quarry. the water churned violently as the otter inside thrashed, its sleek body twisting to evade him. but solharr’s grip was iron, and with a triumphant growl, he pulled the creature free, its fur glistening like polished stone in the weak winter light.
the otter squealed, its high-pitched cry echoing across the river, but solharr held firm. he placed it carefully on the bank, securing it beneath his paw before turning his attention back to the water. six more. his stomach growled in protest, but he ignored it, his resolve unshaken.
with another leap, solharr moved to the next hovel, his mind singularly focused on completing the task that would secure his future.
