the water was frigid but not enough to deter the hunter. the fish that swam beneath the surface were large enough to sustain him for at least a day. anathi stood still against the shivers and watched their silver bodies shift in and out of sight. yiza apha, intlanzi. his voice was but a soft rumble.

it was a waiting game, anathi had found. the fish darted from one base to the next as though they were aware of the danger looming over them. his tongue ran hungrily over the draw of his maw as he waited for the opportunity to strike.

then, as though through divine intervention, a fish leapt just far enough out of the water for anathi to snap and grip onto its tail. the creature writhed and the hold was lost, though only for a moment. he immediately ducked under the water and snapped once more, this time finding his hold to be on the fish's abdomen. 

the hunter gave a stomp of excitement. the remaining fish sped to the other side of the water, much to anathi's dismay. he sucked his teeth and retreated to a nearby tree to begin his meal. were it not for the ache in his hind leg, he might have been able to finish.

suspicious, anathi spun around to find a leech holding tight to his thigh. he yelped and leapt back, consequently falling over onto his back. it took a moment for him to gain even an ounce of composure, at which point he carefully reached to gnaw the creature away.
