All Welcome
The gentle slope of the land had begun to dip toward the hollow, and in the quiet of the early day, Tvar stood at the edge of the meadow as if carved from the very stone beneath his paws.

The ebony-blue cast of his thick pelt blended with the shade of a nearby deciduous tree, its low branches creating a canopy of calm overhead. Beneath him, thin streams wound through the grass, their soft trickling lost in the hush of the morning.

Along the banks, cattails and bulrush shivered in a subtle breeze, and now and then, the hum of a dragonfly drifted by on whispered wings.

He allowed himself a slow breath. He had no urgent task, but he did not waste his time. He checked his posture, keeping his head raised and ears alert.

look. ahead, the green-eyed winterborn sees another wolf. they are blanketed in greys, creams, and a dark mask covers their face. a lone dragonfly, alive for reasons unknown to evenfall in this season, floats upon the air.

feel. paws fall in a steady rhythm toward the other as the sun worshipper closes the gap between.

smell. evenfall cranes his neck and inhales as he draws closer to the other wolf, their scent firing off countless receptors in the barrels of his muzzle. male. pack. healthy.

taste. the wolf swallows, remnants of his breakfast dislodging from teeth and bringing a slightly sour taste to his mouth. he does not make a face to indicate this. greetings, he says.

listen. his ears cup forward, awaiting the other's reply.

Tvar shifted his weight as the sound of steady pawsteps reached him, his sharp blue eyes flicking toward the source. Tvar’s posture remained unyielding, his tall frame relaxed but alert as he watched the stranger close the gap between them.

“Likewise. It's early to find company,” Tvar said, his voice low, even, carrying the faint rasp of disuse. He inclined his head slightly, not quite a gesture of welcome but enough to acknowledge the other wolf’s presence.

His eyes lingered on them, taking in their form and scent with the calculating calm of a mind that missed little.

"Passing through?” he asked, his tone unhurried.

listen. the larger wolf speaks, and evenfall's cupped ears funnel the sound inward. the sentiment strikes the sun-worshipper as odd. company was found any time of the day. he notes the hoarseness in the stranger's tone.

look. blue eyes meet his own only briefly—not long enough to provoke a challenge. evenfall has no intentions of putting himself in danger. he notices the blue eyes linger on other parts of his body, no doubt sizing him up as an opponent should things go sour.

smell. he speaks again, and evenfall catches a hint of the other wolf's breath. i am not yet sure, evenfall responds.

Tvar gave a brief nod, acknowledging the response without pressing further. “Then stay as long as you need,” he said, his tone even and direct. His gaze held steady on the other wolf, though he didn’t make any effort to close the distance between them.

“The meadow’s quiet enough for it,” he added, a simple statement rather than an attempt to make conversation. He didn’t see the need to pry into the stranger’s uncertainty; they would speak more if they chose to.

For now, he saw no reason to stay. He'd go about his way, despite the tension in his pelt. He was hesitant to turn his back on the stranger, but he did nonetheless, ignoring the creeping feeling.

So he stopped, and turned back.

"Where are you from?"
