After having it all, and losing it all one would think the power-crazed beast that ruled over Cara Moretti would have been defeated. But with Cara, one would think you’d already know it is best to think twice.
Defeat was part of what she lived for, after all.
In order to rise she had had to sink beforehand, and as tedious as it was, it was the act of having to rise again what gave life to the vicious beast beneath the surface of her skin.
Cara, unlike her beau, was not moved by any emotion, save for maybe rage. She had a one-track mind and a one-track heart; she was in it for the glory not for the second prize. And really the Spine had been cold left-overs since day one. After her once idolatrized Queen had stopped her breathing Cara should have killed her from her mind as well.
Gratitude doesn’t do shit if the one you’re grateful to is dead.
After her idol’s death, Cara had ruled under her shadow – thankfully her prideful eyes never got quite adjusted to the dark.
Letting go of the rotten desires to pull the Spine from its seemingly never-ending misery had been the best choice she had ever made – and that was a lot to say for someone with such a large repertoire of bad choices.
Even if the place had not turned into a complete shithole, her abandonment had at least stopped her world from becoming one.
Again Cara Moretti felt alive.
Even if there wasn’t a throne with her name on it and the crown she wore on her head was not visible for anyone but her, Cara was already rising back.
Suddenly, the gentle touch of her lover upon her cheek placed her thoughts to rest.
With her eyes narrowing and her ears sliding back out of reach in case he wanted to make an impromptu attack once again, Cara’s own muzzle found Keith’s neck. “Hungry?” she breathed into his fur whilst tugging softly at the strands of fur that tickled her nose as she buried herself deeper into him.
Like the Spine, the period on which Keith had disappeared from her life had been long buried. Their relationship, as chaotic as it had started as, had taken a turn for the best as soon as Kaname had been ditched and the ugly truths about their love triangle had been sorted.
Even before he joined her in her seclusion for an improvised honeymoon, the lust that had kept them linked to one another had already begun to evolve into something with greater significance: love.
And even if Cara was not the type of girl that trusted blindly that love could conquer all, she was certain that she and her lover, could.
