The wolves of the Spine were the very wolves that resided here, of course, but Nanuk found no reason to tell them this. Not yet. Instead, she gave a short, concise answer. "They survived." Her tone was guttural, not quite growling, but not the smooth baritone of her usual conversation. She did not growl as their actions did not yet warrant it; deference and respect placated the Beta for the moment. 

Months had passed since the storm and so the question they asked was one that told the polar bear someone had spoken about their presence there, that perhaps these wolves had been informed about the storm that had driven them out. So she countered with a gruff "Who's asking?"
