Saena's intentions had been good. Seek out another of Scarlett's brood, see if she couldn't entice them into pursuing the gamekeeper trade alongside their sister. Unfortunately, the one she found had an evident magnet for trouble; she'd scarcely spotted the youth before she took off, and when the alpha female pursued, she found herself in a rather precarious position for her choice.
As it turned out, pigs might have ignored a wolf puppy but the moment the adult wolf became visible, they'd charged, and in that they didn't discriminate. Sesi was as likely to be gored as Saena was, and Sesi was closer. Thankfully, she reacted most quickly with a screech as she flew past, and Saena fell in somewhere behind her with her heart seizing in her chest. She'd never seen a herd of pigs like this, certainly not on the prairie, and their aggression was alarming even to the seasoned gamekeeper.
She dove into the underbrush of an unfamiliar wood after Sesi, hoping for a moment to catch her breath but not optimistic about it. Pigs had tiny eyes—surely they hadn't seen where the wolves went? But the thunder was growing louder and Saena had her doubts about that was well. Her eyes darted around for any sign of Sesi, but in the thick tangle of threadbare twigs, she couldn't seem to spot the grey-haired juvenile.
