Her gaze was quickly broken and apologies were uttered, but even still, Reek did not let his body loosen. No slack was given in his tight posture. He wanted to appear imposing and powerful; he wanted to make an impression early on that he was not to be trifled with. Obviously, he had failed in doing so when accepting Ukko. The same mistake would not be made again.
The number of wolves showing up on the border had been increasing at an exponential rate as of late, each seeking asylum from the harsh winter. Each was another mouth to feed, and Reek had no problem turning a prospective joiner away if they had nothing to offer in return. Phoenix Maplewood was not in the business of divvying out handouts, and Reek was no charitable man except to those who had already established themselves in his pack— his family. This kindness did not extend to those who made their home beyond his borders.
Initially, he planned to turn this prospect away before she rattled off a short list of two necessary skills. His ears perked especially when her heard she was a hunter. With the lead gamekeeper out of commission, the pack's hunts had been an absolute mess. Some new blood and an extra body would prove effective, especially if she had the skill to back it up.
The corners of his mouth twisted into a grin and he looked upon the stranger inquisitively. "Show me," he said. "Lead me on a hunt." If she could prove herself here, she would have a sure home among his family.
