Renn opened one eye, her ears rammed in the direction of the other wolf. Fresh scent drifted towards her, mingled with the metallic odour of blood. What on earth was going on over there? Instinct drew her towards the struggle, maybe it was the thrill of hunting, she didn't know, but as she rose to her paws and loped across the landscape, she realised that something wasn't right.
The blurry outline of a female coyote hurtled across the ground, the wolf snapping close behind. One of the she-coyote's legs seemed to be mangled but, not surprisingly, she was still running. From observing her parents, Renn knew that coyotes posed a dreadful threat to wolf pups but surely there was no reason to kill them now. A deep growl began to rise in her throat as she sped up, ready to to intercept the wolf as it raced by. Coyote or not, other predators should be treated with respect.
