The wolf surprised him by rising, at least partially, though he remained submissively bowed. He spoke in a respectful tone, apologizing for disturbing Peregrine and begging not to be dismissed. The Alpha male's nostrils flared but he said nothing, letting the man speak his piece. Although hearing the words almost dead certainly didn't warm the swarthy leader to him, he decided he'd at least humor the stranger.

"Prove yourself, then," he replied perhaps coldly. "Right now." His dark tail swished, tightening over his haunches. "Prove to me you're not just dead weight who'll use up my pack's resources without giving back. I don't have time for charity cases."
