There was not much about the stranger that Starbuck liked, but her heart was moved by pity, not by fear. The way he looked at her rankled the most, as well as the way he seemed determined to be unpleasant. Still, even the wretched deserved kindness. With this in mind, Starbuck took up her song again, the notes of its refrain high and clear.
With the refrain finished, she let her voice trail off again and looked to him, hoping he was pleased enough to leave her be, or at least to stop looking at her like that.
C’est mon ami
Rendez-le moi
J’ai son amour
Il a ma foi
With the refrain finished, she let her voice trail off again and looked to him, hoping he was pleased enough to leave her be, or at least to stop looking at her like that.
There are fairer things than I to behold, good stranger. All about me these pools hold sea-dwelling creatures. They are strange and beautiful things, and may also be good to eat, if that is what you wish.Perhaps he was hungry, he seemed as though food would do him some good.
