She was close to home, though her heat had not faded. She didn't dare return; the male wolves there were all family to her. She didn't dare imagine mating with any of them; her children would not be deformed because of it.

So she lingered in neutral territory, feeding herself on the slow moving rabbits she could catch. She stood over one such catch, in the middle of a less-than-substantial meal, unwilling to be picky. She was no hunter, but beggars couldn't be choosers. How truly did that saying apply to her now...
