He heard Alya scream, and hoped to all hell that it was simply because of the sight of the cougar, and not because anything had gotten her. He couldn't look back to see, because if he did, the cougar would have him without even a fight. The taste of blood confirmed that he had hit his mark, though it seemed to spur the feline on, her growls drowning out the surrounding sounds of the forest. Which, now that he realized it, had gone quiet. Alya was no longer screaming, but she was calling for Charon. Her voice got further and further away, a sign she had gotten away. 

Dash had succeeded in saving Alya.

But, he wasn't an idiot. While the cougar was thin, and not in her prime because of it, she was anything but weak, and he knew she was perfectly capable of killing him in a one-on-one fight. But, Dash wasn't a quitter, either. He wasn't just going to roll over and let himself be killed. He was going to fight for his life. 

The cougar lunged and Dash growled, charging to meet her half way. He went low, not willing to expose his neck or underbelly to his opponent. He tried to grab onto a foreleg and if he did, he would jerk with all his might, trying to dislocate, or maybe even break it. He tried to swing his body around so that the cougar couldn't sink her teeth into him, but he knew she was fast. Was he faster?
