Her heart fell at the look in Deirdre's eyes, for she knew it would be a hard conversation to have with the light-filled sister she knew so well. But to have it with the weary, worrisome echo of what they had been in their den so long ago— that was harder still. Emaleth wanted so fiercely to fall back upon the pattern they both knew so well, where the darker sister tended and guarded the lighter. But it could not be so today, for this would be the day that they were to formally part— not forever, of course, but that Emaleth would not live within Donnelaith was a finality of its own. Still, as Deirdre neared, the elder twin could not move to crush her heart so soon in their reunion.
"Dear heart," she whispered, the sound containing all the bitter sweetness of her emotion. "You look as though someone has died." Their pattern was strong, after all, and Emaleth could not deny Deirdre healing if she were able to conjure it. But Deirdre did not respond, remaining still and quiet, and the dark witch knew she must have some sense of the conversation they would have. In a low voice, Emaleth told her of her plans, and when they parted it was with heavy hearts and perhaps some bitterness.
