As if summoned by his thoughts, Pema appeared on the scene with a questioning look upon her face. She began to talk to the girl in a low, soothing voice, and the tension in his shoulders relaxed somewhat. He hoped that her presence would soothe the girl more than his; she smelled of seed and sex and clearly had been violated quite recently. 

I came upon her just moments ago," he murmured to Pema, drawing closer to half-whisper in her ear. He didn't want to talk about the girl as if she weren't there. "I was going to call for you. She's frightened, maybe hurt. I think we should help."

Shale looked at the young woman, his face neutral. He didn't want to do anything that could possibly frighten her.
