His tail wagged as he drew closer, thinking that she'd stopped to allow him to catch up. "Hey, Steph," he called to her, hoping she wouldn't know how hurt his feelings were. He'd been gone a long time, and he knew he couldn't expect her to have saved space in her heart for him. And, in fact, he drew up short when he saw the glare on her face, his heart plummeting down out of his chest and into the icy slush below.
