The sylph picked her way through the sand, nosing through the grains for anything of interest, the waves lapping at the shore only a few meters away. It was calm, and if the girl ignored the chill and the clouds, she could almost imagine it summer. The dunes were dusted by snow, save for where the ocean pulled herself up when the tides were to their fullest. The waters were receded, now, and the girl examined the strip of land where the ocean left her treasures, having already amassed a small pile of things that had caught her interest.
It was easy, here, alone with the gentle waves and the quiet happiness of discovery. She'd done her part that day already, patrolling the borders and finding little joy in the task, even adding a hare to their caches. It was only when she felt satisfied with her contributions that she'd slipped past the borders to the beach that was quickly becoming her own haven.
Glass on glass broke the silence as she dropped another piece of smooth rock on her pile, unsure of what exactly it was but liking it all the same. It had the weight and feel of a pebble, but was green as moss, almost translucent. Her favorite, however, was the blue she'd found that morning, having never found anything quite so beautiful. Nudging her collection lovingly, she moved a little ways off to poke at a promising lump in the sand.
