He didn't mean to make Liffey upset, but he sensed her discomfort matching his own, and he fought (unsuccessfully) to calm down.  Still, the memory of the previous meeting was fresh in his mind, and he simply couldn't relax around the alpha.

The question at least gave him something to latch onto, and he was almost grateful.  "Better," he answered.  Not better better, obviously; he had a few weeks to go on that account.  But he could stand, could move a bit so long as he kept all weight off of it, and it hurt less.  "Lyra's been helping."  He offered by way of a neutral topic, not mentioning her own problems with him, or her comments as to his future.  He didn't want Liffey to know those either, not now.
