she knew unfortunately, intimately, what he was feeling.  quickly she moved to touch him and then she hesitated, lingering a beat away as her eyes sought his in a silent plea for consent.

i'm sorry, she says, trying to digest her feelings in a way that won't excaberate the situation.  i love you, she adds plainly, as if it'll fix things even though she knows it won't.  but it's more than she was ever offered and it was all she ever wanted; it was the only thing she knew how to give him.
