That put her at ease, if only a little, as the others gathered and took their places. Most of those who were present were strangers to her, and she could feel their eyes burning as brightly as the color of her coat.

As Peregrine began to speak, the murmurs died down into a hush as they turned their attention toward him. When she was introduced, Fox gave Perry a grand smile, rubbing her head against him to ensure that he knew how much she appreciated his kind gestures. Osprey echoed his words, and Fox couldn't help but glance to Perry nervously. Is this what children did? Bark out when tension was thick in the air? Aside from Osprey, nobody had said a word. Fox wasn't sure if there was anything to say, but she braced herself despite her self-assurances.
