If there was anything more Gannet had wanted to say, it was lost as the focus and tone of the conversation shifted yet again.
Ashlar got upset sometimes, but there was a difference between that and what she seemed to be feeling. Gannet didn't realize Liffey was likely overexaggerating out of emotion, and he was taken aback by the fact that they might have said such a thing to her.
Why?he asked quietly, preparing without even realizing it to listen carefully to her troubles. He couldn't imagine that they could hate her.
