From the heart of the plains, Artyom spotted a young doe in the distance. He paused in his tracks to observe its movements, watching with keen mahogany eyes as the creature dug at the snow in a search for forage below. Fruitless in its search and, feeling the gaze of a predator on her, the deer turned away and made her way deeper among dense foliage.
Artyom had no intention to fell her, definitely not on his own, but he was curious to see what others might be nearby. She would not survive long on her own without a herd, and the ranger hoped fiercely that she would lead him right to her companions so he could study them for a time. After the disaster that was his beaver hunt, he was eager to carry out another - successfully, this time. He slipped into the cache, silent on careful ivory paws, following the doe's fresh tracks in the snow.
