He had descended and left the Plateau behind, in search of newer ground. Some things he recognized from the tales of his father. Others, he did not. Funny, he thoughts, how the mind will conjure pictures for things it has only heard in words, and leave a heart disappointed or in greater awe when the reality of a place is uncovered.

Augustine had followed the river south and bounced a zigzag down the plains when pack scent had lifted from either side of him. He would investigate these later, certainly. But for the moment he simply wished to gain a better bearing of the land before he sought to engage the locals.

He had reached the lake by twilight. Flickers of the setting sun bounced off the vast surface of the expanse the river poured into. Admiration stole his breath; he peered out across the rippling waters, even as his eyes passed over the dark shape of another.

A soft smile stole his face, though he imagined he was still too far for them to see. "Hello," even the softness of his voice sounded too loud on the night, "doesn't the lake look like the sky has poured itself into it?"
