The bellow of an elk call through the fall air echoed over the rolling meadows, and the arctic beast lifted his head to the sound. It was coming from the west, where Dovev could see the massive blue eye that was Greatwater Lake from upon the ridge. Cool granite ledges and boulders studded the steep slope, and cold gray eyes scanned the lake's shores which were choked with dark green pine forests on several sides.

He had traveled up the Rising Sun Valley and through narrow passes that opened up onto the sprawling flatlands. His nostrils had picked up very few scents of wolves, and he could infer that there weren't many concentrations of wolves on these plains. It was a shame. The presence of a bull elk bugle showed that prey roamed free.
