a curious scent carried on the winds over sapphique. coraline was far too young for that instinctive knowledge that came to mature wolves when they encountered such, but she was old enough to feel quite agitated by it. restless and anxious, as if something was wrong.
somehow, at some point, the sea girl convinced herself that someone could be hurt and she ought to investigate. and she did just that, realizing as she pursued the source that they were unfamiliar to her. coraline knew that her mother had taken someone into the pack; she'd fully intended to avoid the newcomer. deciding that it was too late to turn back, coraline followed the trail until she saw the back of a woman sitting at the beach.
just lounging, as if she owned it. coraline bristled and stood awkwardly, wrestling with a befuddling mixture of anger and confusion.
