She was only just starting to understand the words that she heard around her, but she knew enough to get the gist of what her mom was saying—the sea was dangerous and she should be careful. She was momentarily discouraged, wondering why they were here if she wasn't to go in the water. 

It was only when her mom mentioned her brother and going to the edge that her gaze found Quennell where he battled the foam of the waves.
