Though the tip of one ear still maintained a bit of floppiness, Lycabas had no trouble hearing. In fact, he was quite reactive to the many sounds in his terribly small world. Birdsong often woke him, but it never kept him awake for long, and the shenanigans of his littermates were a constant symphony -- not entirely unpleasant to listen to.
Still, after a while, it became apparent that he preferred the quiet of night.
The sun had only been set for an hour or so when Lycabas perched himself at the mouth of the family den and set his ears forward to eavesdrop on the subdued sounds of the dark. He listened to the fading calls of crickets and frogs, wondering what made such noises. He could even hear the screeching of bats, as they used echolocation to navigate the thick woods.
But it was the hoot of an owl -- never experienced by Lycabas before this moment -- that drew the most attention from him. He strained to hear it again; his ears perked with such intensity that the final crease of his floppy ear at last became pointy and straight.
