Rae was hunting when the call came, and it caught her at a very unfortunate moment. She startled, and her lunge fell short. The yearling felt a brief pressure at the place where her neck met her chest, a distinct ripping sensation, but no pain. At least for a moment.
Then her prey was gone and it was all blood and a fierce sting over a deep ache. Too much blood, Rae realized immediately, but she felt oddly numb to the horror of it. She shot a glance down at her chest, red fur darkening rapidly as it soaked through, and went to meet Chacal. She was still in shock when she got there, a little unsteady on her paws. Blood trailed in her wake.
