They'd chased him here, he thought. It was hard to be sure. When he reached for his memories he found them all smeared in red, blurry and surreal like a story he'd heard. Like something that had happened to someone else.

But it'd happened to him, hadn't it?

The proof was carved into his skin, long cuts adorning his flanks and his chest. At the center of the cavern, Dirtwater Fox collapsed. Stars glittered through the broken ceiling. Somewhere far above his head, he thought he could hear them whispering.
