he had been spiraling towards the earth, whimsical in his descent and eagerly seeking any taste of blood that could be found. on this occasion, rare as it was, the scents were overwhelmed by one pungent terrestrial note: the musk of horses.

now, qapnuk did not discern between the grass-eater beasts; he saw each of them from overhead: the trapezoidal bison, the narrow-built herds of deer and elk, and then there were these things with middling bodies and long legs, like some mutant child of them all.

from above he saw very little differentiation. the smell, though—it was enough of a riot to the senses that qapnuk was tempted to give up his hunting entirely, and go sweeping through the grasslands to the east just to cleanse his palette.
