He did not react, not initially, only returning the man’s stare with one of his own as he mulled over the accusation. He knew the truth of it, but hadn’t realized that others, especially her son, could know the feelings in his heart. 

Hadn’t he been covert?

Clearly not. 

And so, he cocked his head, deciding that the truth will out. And, if I am, I assume you have something to say about it? Though, your mother is a grown woman and capable of handling her own affairs.
