At least Mae didn’t have many strangers pressing in on her borders. Whatever pack had once claimed this land had clearly left its mark—enough of one to keep most would-be intruders at bay. It made recruiting difficult, Kaiaka mused, but Mae was nothing if not stubborn. The earthen she-wolf had little doubt in the blind lass ability to persevere.
She rounded a tree and came to a halt.
A she-dog stood ahead, a hare gripped between her jaws.
So much for solitude.
Kaiaka’s brow furrowed, her gaze narrowing as she sized up the stranger. Mae had said she was alone out here, so who was this? And what business did she have in Swiftcurrent Creek?
With a cautious step forward and a sideways glance, Kaiaka broke the silence.
