Pain pulsed through her ribs with the effort, but she pushed past it, stepping forward to cut off the other’s advance. This might not be her home, but she wasn’t about to stand by while someone walked in with such blatant disrespect. Mae had worked too damn hard for that.

Kaiaka’s voice was flat—detached, almost clinical. She wasn’t spoiling for a fight, but if one came, she’d give it everything she had. The piebald stranger might not realize what ground she was walking on, but Kaiaka wouldn’t let ignorance slide without a reckoning.
