Tunnel-vision was a dangerous affliction; it had been the leading cause of June's close-calls almost since birth. She'd not yet found a way to combat it, though — and so, when the deer hesitated, she assumed it had only caught its paw in a gopher hole. Perhaps she did not think far enough even to assume. Perhaps she only saw the scant few feet she was able to gain, bringing her just close enough to the deer to pounce.

She didn't see Sven; she didn't see that it was another wolf that had so startled the deer.

The deer stumbled again as June's body struck its flank. It bleated in terror as teeth sank into its overheated flank, still trying to flee from the wolf that had suddenly appeared in front of it. This confusion and this extra weight took long, precious second to correct. By the time it regained its bearings, it was, quite possibly, too late.
