Stubborn as she was, Eydis he begun to accept the simple fact that her children were dead. There were no changelings, only illness and death that ripped them from her grasp. She had wasted vital time that she should have spent recovering and rebuilding on a fantasy that only made her more miserable; and yet coming to terms with reality had not healed her. She had wanted to be dead too, wished each day for a tree to fall or a stampede of bison. It never came.

She didn't know how she could even begin to feel better. How did so many mothers lose children and continue moving forward, and why couldn't she?

Slumping into the shallow shore of a lake she hoped that gentle waves would make her feel a bit better at the very least. The moon was high, and the crickets seemed to be singing for the bright night it brought.
