He supposed that his mind may have been made up long ago. A good leader did not sit idly while wolves died, bury their bodies and press forwards. He should have destroyed the snakes in the grass long ago, assessed risks and taken the necessary measures. That was what a leader did.
It was not about distribution or children or alliances so much as it was strategy. He had stayed because Leandros trusted the segundo, because he had loved him a way Kemal had only seen once before in his brother. Kemal had found a sense of duty in watching over Leto's young, in his constant patrols and his horribly risky hunts, but there was no room for that now. There were no children to watch, no borders worth patrolling, no caches he wanted to fill.
Should he find the segundo as he hoped, he would meet him with a snarl. No common language had to be shared, no words needed to be exchanged.
