Katmai finally found reason to be annoyed. He tried to downplay it, though, and made his tone nonchalant when he corrected, "More of a cousin, really. He's only a few months older than me." That wasn't how that worked at all, but Katmai didn't want his uncle hanging around. A cousin, he could take.

"I have heard that home is what you make of it," he told her. "I'm not sure if it's really true. I've found myself in many places that don't feel like home, despite my best efforts. But I hope that this one will become that for you."

It was starting to, for him. Kinusi and Kindle and Treepie helped with that. Perhaps, one day, Kira would, too.

"Do you want children?" he asked her, coming around to a question that had been at the back of his mind. Rather abruptly, actually. "Sorry — I just wondered. I don't know that we can support too many litters, being still so new."
